The Case of Mashonaland West Province Shadreck Mutimbanyoka National AIDS Council George Machacha University of Zimbabwe Vakai Matutu North West University National AIDS Council, Zimbabwe JAbstract: Uptake of VMMC services has remained low in Mashonaland West province with a total of 10,593 males having been circumcised since 2013 (MoHCC, 2013), with a percentage uptake of 7.2%, a figure way off the 80% target of circumcising 145, 646 by 2017 in the province. Thus, the inclusion of men in this public health strategy suggests a new conceptualization of sex, manhood and male fidelity, enabling men to positively intervene through changed attitudes and behavioural patterns.ĭeterminants of Poor Uptake of Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision by Males Aged 18-49 in Rural Zimbabwe. This is because,as one activist poignantly states, “As long as our men are not part of the war, then we should forget about ending HIV and AIDS infection and the violence that comes with it.”2 At issue is the exclusion of men who are seen as significant contributors to the spread of HIV and AIDS. This chapter therefore argues for the inclusion of men in all HIV and AIDS intervention strategies. Worse still, some men cannot maintain faithful marital relationships. These encounters cause men to be the key drivers of sexually transmitted infections including HIV and AIDS, and unfortunately, many men pass on the infection to their life partners. This chapter argues that the use of power to dominate, rather than empower, perpetuates violence and aggression against women in the southern African region, especially the tendencies toward “macho” power that link manhood to careless sexual encounters.
